Wiki How2s
From How2s
This how2 deals with wikis. Wiki is a word meaning quick. The idea is that you can edit the page quick quick thus the first wiki was called WikiWikiWeb and used a words bashed togeather format to make links.
Below you will find more detailed wiki How2's (eventually).
Spam
Spam is a fact of wiki life - get used to it.
However there are many things you can do to slow or even stop spam.
- Check the Recent Changes page (if your wiki supports it) and double check all changes since you last logged in.
- Delete all spam on sight.
- Low use wiki's would do well to require members sign up (How2 make Mediawiki users sign up before editing pages)
- Random use of Capcha or other bot stoppers is good
- use a reg-ex to filter for the most common spam tricks and words and ban them. (media wiki supports this)
- Some hosts allow you to block access from open proxies and anon-relays.
- on the whole blocking Chinees IP addresses en masse reduces the crime rate on you wiki a lot
- setting no-follow messages in your old revisions stops spammers finding you via old spam (and google)
- Lock pages such as Help, Main Page and other pages unlikely to change.(use a discussion page to talk about changes)
- If your host allows it run a bot tracker that stops bad bots (spam bots) and logs good ones (google-bot)
- Every IP that spams you - block it
- Hurt the spammers by Chongqing thier spam http://chongqed.org for more
- visit http://lordmatt.co.uk and ask Matt what he did to deal with spam.
- visit the spam huntress wiki (google it I can't recall the url) and pick up fresh tips and news
- Google "Wiki Spam" and related words from time to time to see what ideas the developer communty may come up with.
- be aware of known spammers
